Course Narrative
In this course we explored the breadth of Mexican literature expanding from pre-columbian times to the modern era. This course fulfills Major Learning Outcome 1: Language Proficiency and Major Learning Outcome 3: Literary Culture and Knowledge.
The course was structure chronologically beginning with some of the earliest known form of stories from Mesoamerica, more specifically the Popol Vuh. We then focused on the colonial era novel El periquillo sarniento. One interesting comparison that we made was the comparison of the structure of this novel with some Spanish influences such as Lazarillo de Tormes. As a senior year class this class allowed me to make many connections to works I had studied in previous years, this being one of them.
In addition to a couple of literary analysis we were also required to work on a group presentation for one of a series of short stories. We chose to do our presentation on Coatlicue by Elena Poniatowska. This work stood out to me because I have an interest in Ancient Mexican studies.
